Author: Nelson DeMille Plum Island, the first of a series by Nelson DeMille, stars John Corey, a New York Police Department detective. John is recuperating from near fatal gunshot wounds and goes to his uncles summerhouse on the water off Long Island to rest and relax. Hes been resting and relaxing for about five months, and is still not up to speed in the body, but has gone a long way past relaxed in the mind! In fact, hes just about bored to death and wondering what hes going to do until he can get back to work.
Luckily, he gets a visit from the local police chief who surprises him with the news that a couple of close neighbors have been murdered on their back deck and he wants John to help find the killer. The husband and wife murdered were young and beautiful and on the short list of friends that John had met while at the summerhouse. Both worked at Plum Island, a government facility close to shore that has a reputation for being an extremely dangerous and scary place, although officially its a research facility finding ways to fight illness in animals. When everyone suspects a large ice chest of stuff is missing from the couples boat, fear is widespread that a plague or virus is going to be turned loose on the public.
The investigation into the deaths, the relationship between John and the feds, and the humor throughout, are extremely entertaining. Ive already started the next book in the series, The Lions Game, and am looking forward to several more. If you like Harlan Coben or Lee Child, I think you will also like books by DeMille.
The books in this series are Plum Island, The Lions Game, Night Fall and Wildfire. DeMille also has a second series starring Paul Brenner, but I havent started that series yet.
