We couldnt help but notice last week a sidewalk going up at the most- southern end of South Davis Drive. Its straight across the intersection of Russell Parkway where the new Wal-mart is on the west side of the road. Craftsmanship-wise its a fine piece of work. In all seriousness, those who built it can be proud. Its something were sure the squirrels will enjoy for years to come. EDITORIAL:
Squirrels?
Who else? What else? Excluding what appears to be an old building one thats seen much, much better days and an occupied trailer, there is nothing else bordering this sidewalk but woods. It runs from Fred Drive to the aforementioned Russell Parkway about 500 yards we would venture to guess and all you can see running along with it are trees. Trees and more trees, and you have to go quite a ways through those trees to come out the other side. (In other words there is no new subdivision or should we say yet just on the other side.)
Now why in the world would the city build a sidewalk for squirrels? Or, Pearl Stephens Elementary School is about a quarter of a mile up the road. Perhaps this was meant as a way for students to cross over Russell to get to the new Wal-mart.
Yes, thats sarcasm. We personally hope not to see anybody cross Russell at that particular spot pretty much at any spot on Russell. Its dangerous! Unless theyre going to build a bridge over it (now thats a good idea), concertina wire to discourage anybody from crossing Russell at that spot in particular, we believe would have been better.
Granted we may not be able to see the big picture.
Were a small, small staff. Its entirely possible we missed the meeting where they talked about the future of this area. There may be big, big things planned to go in those woods. Perhaps that will be the location of one of those parks officials talk about every now and then. But if so, somebody should tell the realtor its already spoken for. He or she still has his or her sign up that its for sale.
And for all you residents out there in existing inner-city neighborhoods, especially those that have been around for many, many years. We know youve paid taxes for a very long time, and we know you had hoped and prayed youd see the day a sidewalk was put in your neighborhood for your kids, for you, for your neighbors. Sorry about that. Maybe next time.
First, lets take care of the squirrels.
