Location, quality of life and a pro-business environment are three of the reasons why more than 7,900 companies call Howard County home, creating almost 139,000 jobs. Companies that move to Howard County often praise the mix of urban and suburban amenities including restaurants, golf courses and parks.

High-tech

The area boasts a variety of private-sector technology and bioscience employers including the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, GTS Duratek, Essex Corp. and many more. One in nine employers and one in five employees are in the technology field in Howard County.

Other significant employers can be found in the county’s fast- growing office and industrial parks such as Columbia Gateway, the Troy Hill Commerce Center and the Maryland Food Center.
Employers in these locations include Corvis Corp., Honeywell Technology Solutions, SYSCO, U.S. Foodservice and Giant Food Inc.

By the numbers

According to the Howard County Economic Development Authority, this county boasts more than 46 million square feet of office, industrial and
flex space.
Approximately one-third of the county’s residents commute to Washington, about 20 miles south. Another one-third commute to Baltimore, just 10 miles north. Many local companies recruit workers from both metropolitan areas, which, combined, form the fourth largest business market in the United States.
Transportation links between Baltimore and Washington include interstates 95 and 70.
The Port of Baltimore is 20 minutes away, and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is even closer — approximately 10 minutes from Ellicott City, the county seat.
County residents are among the wealthiest in the nation with a median household income of $88,555, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. ?
