Dorena-Hickman Ferry runs cut short

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is shortening the daily operating schedule because of high water and drift on the Mississippi River at Hickman.

Starting Dec. 28, the ferry will make the last afternoon run from the Kentucky side of the river at 4:30 p.m. and the last departure from the Missouri side of the river at 4:45 p.m.

This schedule will allow the Dorena-Hickman Ferry to return to the Kentucky shore before dark.

According to Captain Edward Floyd, high water on the Mississippi has resulted in drift in the river, making it difficult for the ferry pilot to see after dark.

The shortened operating hours will continue until the river drops and drift no longer creates a hazard to ferry navigation.

With current river level projections the ferry could remain on the shortened operating schedule for several days.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry connects KY 1354 at Hickman, with Missouri Route A and Route 77 near Dorena, Mo.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry operates from the Hickman Landing starting at 7 a.m. with regular river crossings during daylight hours.

Passage for passenger vehicles is $12 with additional tolls for trucks, motor homes, and vehicles pulling trailers.

Missouri and Kentucky have the geographic distinction of being the only border states that are not directly connected by a road or bridge. The only direct route between the two states is the Dorena-Hickman Ferry.
