An investigation into the in-game fight between the Fulton County and Calloway County football teams Oct. 2 has resulted into charges being filed.

The Kentucky State Police have charged a juvenile member of the Fulton County football team with second-degree assault.

The parents of a Calloway County football player contacted the Fulton County Attorney after their child sustained serious injury from the fight. Kentucky State Police were requested to investigate. An investigation was conducted which included the viewing of video footage of the confrontation.

As a result of that investigation, a juvenile member of Fulton County’s team was charged with second-degree assault for striking an opposing player with his uniform helmet. The juvenile was charged Nov. 24, and was released to the custody of his guardian. The investigation is ongoing by the Kentucky State Police.

““I was unaware of the charges filed against one of our football players until contacted by media representatives. The charges are through the legal system and the school district has no involvement in the filing or investigation of charges. As stated initially and continually, the actions of our football players involved in the Calloway County fight, were wrong and not acceptable. The player charged is accountable for his individual actions beyond the scope of athletic participation and hopefully has learned a life lesson that will lead him to act and behave the right way in his future,” commented Fulton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Holliday after learning of the charges.

The Oct. 2 incident also resulted in suspensions of 16 players from the Fulton County team. Nine players received a one-game suspension, two received a two-game suspension, four players received a three-game suspension, and one player was suspended for four games.

The Pilots had three football games remaining in the regularly scheduled season when the suspensions were handed down.

The football player suspended for four games also was a basketball player, therefore he sat the bench during the Pilots’ first basketball game of the season Dec. 1.

One player was suspended “indefinitely’ from “all interscholastic athletic competition in any sport, at any level, at any KHSAA member school.”
