Tennessee’s program to help poor families weatherize homes has received more than 20 times the regular funding, as part of the federal stimulus, which could mean help for South Fulton residents, this winter, who qualify.

The Weatherization Assistance Program assists low income households with weatherizing homes, including installation of insulation and other energy saving procedures to decrease energy bills.

During a normal year, the state works on some 1500 homes, averaging just under $3000 of work for each.

With the increase in funding, the state will serve over six times as many houses, while doubling the amount it can spend per job. However, the funds must be spent or contracted within the next 18 months, and will be distributed through certain non-profit agencies across the state.

For more information, residents can contact the Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Counsel at (731) 885-0462. Applications are accepted on Thursdays from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
