South Fulton Police Department will be the recipient of a $20,000 grant, from the Highway Safety Department, to purchase video systems and hand held communication equipment, according to City Manager Jeff Vowell.

Vowell requested permission from the commission to purchase the equipment, which is 100 percent reimbursable through the grant.

Discussion on a park or recreation center for the city, resurfaced, after Vowell asked the commission for their thoughts and opinions of a park, located on the property in front of the municipal building.

“We have discussed parks before, even before I came here. The property designated is not an ideal location due to the terrain. That is why I have not pursued this,” Vowell said.

Vowell said the location, in front of the municipal building, would be ideal for a park, possibly equipped with a trail and pond, to beautify the city. Mayor David Crocker said he had no objection to the idea, suggesting it could be done in stages. However, Vowell said there are grants available to cover the majority of the cost.

Commissioner Tony Perry had concerns regarding children being in the way of Airvac landings.

Mayor Crocker said the fire department could block off entrances to the park for safety, upon notification of an Airvac landing. Vowell said he would put in some calls about grants and keep the commission updated.

Mayor Crocker proclaimed Sept. 17-23 as Constitution week in the city of South Fulton, asking citizens to reaffirm the ideals the framers of the constitution had in 1787.

During the city manager’s report, Vowell mentioned the property, formerly Mac and Fay Flower Shop, located on Broadway Street, being cleared. Since the city now owns the property, Mayor Crocker said he would like to advertise, and begin accepting bids to sell the property.

Mayor Crocker said he would like to recoup the cost to clear the lot, and would like to see the property back on the tax roll.

Vowell said Obion County Mayor Benny McGuire inquired about the city’s interest in buying the properties in which taxes were delinquent, in response to Commissioner Charles Moody’s questions regarding the issue.

Vowell said the city is not interested in purchasing the properties. However, he informed Commissioner Moody, he would continue to pursue those delinquent.

The commission congratulated Fire Chief David Wilds for completing the pumper/driver-operator certification.
