The following is a story that was printed in the March 24, 1959 issue of the Fulton Daily Leader, to spur memories of 50 years ago, in preparation of the city of Fultons 150th birthday, to be celebrated July 21-22:
The Fulton Chapter of the Business and Professional Womans Federation was organized at the Park Terrace last night, with 58 charter members. Mrs. Kellie Lowe, vocational advisor for the State of Tennessee and a resident of South Fulton was elected president of the group. Mrs. Mildred Anderson, South Fulton faculty member, was named vice president. Mrs. Kellena Durbin is the recording secretary and Mrs. Frank LeMaster, corresponding secretary. Miss Ouida Jewell is treasurer.
Miss Lowe appointed Miss Amaline Homra as membership chairman and Mrs. Otis Bissle as finance chairman.
The Business and Professional Womens Federation is the only womans civic club and sponsors many worthwhile projects.
Its objective are as follows: (1) To elevate standards of women in business and the professions; (2) To promote interests of business and professional women; (3) To bring about a cooperation among business and professional Women of the United States; (4) To extend opportunities to business and professional women through education along lines of industrial, scientific and vocational activities.
The Mayfield chapter sponsored the organization of the local chapter and will serve as a sister chapter. Meeting with the group last night were six representatives of the Mayfield chapter Mrs. Josephine Poyner, president Dr. Lucy Stram, Mrs. Norman Cross, Mrs. Viera Pryor, Mrs. Howard Putnam, Mrs. Melvin Allbritton.
Mrs. Olive Stewart, district director of the Kentucky Business and Professional Women and Mrs. M. Franklin of Marion were also present and took part in the organization of the Fulton chapter.
Preceding the organizational meeting, a small group met on Saturday to make plans to meet Charter members include Miss Ouida Jewell, Mrs. David Phelps, Mrs. Frank LeMaster, Miss Patricia Holder, Mrs. Stanley Jones, Mrs. J.D. Simpson, Mrs. Leland Jewell, Mrs. Ruth Scott, Miss Martha Smith, Mrs. Jimmy Jackson, Mrs. J.E. McNatt, Mrs. Roper Fields, Mrs. Frances Jones, Mrs. Jewell McClain, Mrs. Paul Wright.
