Carr Elementary and Fulton High schools have been declared emergency shelters/feeding stations, to be used by the Fulton County Operation Procedures (EOP).
The Fulton Independent Board of Education approved the proposal during its June 9 meeting. The board agreed a written memorandum of understanding must be approved, specifying guidelines for usage of the buildings, because of the risk of damage.
Board member Dr. Lee Seng said the Graves County High School was recently used as a shelter and it was trashed.
Superintendent Dianne Owen noted certain areas of the buildings could be shut off to limit usage to areas where no classrooms are located. The buildings will be used as official emergency shelters/feeding stations by Fulton County and/or Fulton City emergency officials when needed during an emergency situation.
Also during the meeting, the District Carl Perkins Vocational Plan was approved for fiscal year 2009-10. The Kentucky Department of Education requires local boards to review and approve the plan. The main emphasis of the District Comprehensive Plan will be on student achievement, parent/community involvement and reducing the achievement gap.
In other business, the board:
approved a three-year contract with Pepsi Cola. The school district will receive 25 percent commission from sales of drinks and snacks. The district has been using Coca Cola Products, and receives no commission.
agreed to continue the Community Education Grant, which employs a full- time community education director and pending available funds, is renewable on an annual basis. The director works with lifelong learning opportunities, volunteer programs, expanded utilization of the school facilities through adult education classes, and collaboration between business/industries and the school programs and resources.
appointed board member Bill Robertson to serve as the legislative contact for the school board. The Kentucky School Board Association requests every year a board member serve as a contact.
accepted the Kentucky School Board Insurance Trust renewal quote for property, boiler, general liability, errors and omissions, at a total bid of $31,413.75; umbrella insurance at $1,375.40; workmans compensation insurance at $10,580.58; and a pollution bid at $2,500, for a total of $45,869.73.
accepted a bid from R.J. Roberts of Kentucky for Student and Athletic Accident Insurance at $11,103.93.
approved a $150,000 bond on the treasurer with Nelson Insurance Agency, Inc.; and renewed bonds of depositors for one year with Reelfoot Bank and Heritage Bank.
agreed to spend approximately $30,000 for math textbooks in grades Kindergarten through 12th.
was informed Vickie Swift, food service director, is looking into a program that would allow the entire district to receive free lunches. Superintendent Owen said the district nearly met requirements last year, and may qualify this year.
authorized the finance officer to pay outstanding bills and balance negative internal accounts in order to close the books for the 2008-09 school year.
approved a fundraising request from Angie Nanney, Athletic Director, to sell advertisement signs to local businesses. Estimated funds raised will be between $1,500 and $2,500, and 67 percent will be retained by the school for general athletic needs.
was notified there are currently 418 students enrolled in the district.
learned Family Resource Center director and boys basketball coach George Yarbro is resigning effective June 30, to accept a position in Humboldt, Tenn.
noted the appointments of Brad Rozzell as track head coach, Fred Robinson as assistant coach for track, Hailey Parnell as high school cheerleaders head coach, and Brittany Petty as head coach for the middle school; resignations of Robin Arnzen as the K-12 principal, and Mary Joy as an instructional assistant; and the retirements of Cindy Coltharp from food service, Wanda Gargus as Media Specialist Assistant, and Doris Brodrick as a high school teacher, effective June 30.
Interviews are underway for a second grade teacher, two third grade teachers and a history teacher.
The next board meeting will be July 14, at 7 p.m. at the Board of Education office.
