At approximately 9:30 p.m. May 15, Sgt. Rodney Mitchell with the South Fulton Police Department responded to a disturbance call at 116 Church St. Arriving on the scene, the officer was told by neighbors a man was in the front yard of 506 College St. cursing loudly and glass breakage was heard. Sgt. Mitchell saw the man, later identified as Vern Findley, 35, and asked him to stop twice, at which time the man ignored the request and ran into the residence at 506 College, locking the door behind him. Sgt. Mitchell was also aware two Pit Bull dogs were inside. When Findley continued to ignore requests to exit the house, and a “click” was heard on the other side of the front door, Sgt. Mitchell requested backup from the Fulton Police Department, and contacted SFPD Chief Andy Crocker, who also arrived on the scene. Homes were evacuated on each side of the residence, as a precautionary measure, according to Chief Crocker. The 27th Judicial Special Response Team (SRT) was also requested, after police initially thought Findley may have had someone in the house with him. That, however, was not the case, as he was found to be alone. After police vehicles surrounded the residence and a hostage negotiator with the SRT made numerous attempts to coax Findley from the house, the SRT entered, apprehending Findley and finding a loaded high-powered rifle beside the front door, as well as a loaded 38 pistol in the back bedroom. While cuffing the suspect, one of the Pit Bulls charged an officer and the animal was put down.

Findley, who had an Arizona license in his possession, was charged with Resisting Arrest, Evading Arrest, Simple Possession of Schedule VI marijuana and Possession of a Firearm by a felon. He was lodged in the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex, arraigned May 18, and is now out on bond.
