Program Overview “It’s Your Nickle, Watch it Work” - Don Whitehouse Washington State Department of Transportation Regional Administrator Don Whitehouse of Yakima discussed the five cent gas tax funding package enacted for the Transportation Department by the 2003 Washington State Legislature. Whitehouse explained how the nickle gas tax will fund a 10 year statewide construction plan that includes improving portions of Highway 12. He said the “nickle gas tax” will be invested in bonds and paid over 25 year period. This funding strategy allows the transportation dollars to mature and fund more vital projects. He said most projects funded by the gas tax increase are to improve roads and bridges. Whitehouse said the Highway 12 widening project is fully funded from Burbank to the Wallula Junction. A planning study will be conducted to determine the best route for a 4 lane highway from Wallula to Walla Walla. Funding is not secured for these road construction phases at this time. Whitehouse said once funding is secured and the study has been completed, work would begin in Walla Walla and proceed toward Wallula. For more information on the “Nickle Gas Tax” is available online at www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/
