Program Overview Port of Walla Walla By Jim Kuntz Port of Walla Walla Director Jim Kuntz presented an operational overview to Exchange Club members Monday afternoon. Founded in 1952, the Port of Walla Walla is a municipal corporation responsible for fostering economic development throughout Walla Walla County. Kuntz said the Port of Walla Walla measures success on its ability to : • Create and retain family wage jobs • Expand the region’s tax base • Maintain multi-modal transportation linkages • Provide leadership in enhancing Walla Walla County’s overall economic vitality and quality of life Port of Walla Walla assets continue to grow, now at 42 million dollars according to Kuntz. Major projects involving the Port of Walla Walla include Phase One of the 4-lane Highway 12 widening project. Kuntz said “the money is in the bank” to make Highway 12 from the Snake River bridge to the Wallula Junction 4-lanes within seven years. He said the port will continue lobbying efforts to assist getting a 4-lane highway from the junction to downtown Walla Walla. The Port of Walla Walla is also resurfacing the runway at the WW Regional Airport. The FFA provides funding for 90 percent of this project. Kuntz said it will be completely resurfaced this fall. Kuntz said he and the Port Commissioners are extremely concerned with Horizon Air’s decision to cut Walla Walla flights. Kuntz and commissioners are meeting the Horizon Air’s CEO later this month to voice their concerns. Kuntz said losing the 5 a.m. flight would have a negative impact on our entire community. Horizon Air says it’s losing $2 million per year in Walla Walla. Kuntz said he would fight to keep four flights here. Learn more about the Port of Walla Walla at: www.portofwallawalla.com
