Program Review Dental in Northern Afghanistan - WM. Patrick Sharkey, D.M.D Local dentist WM. Patrick Sharkey, D.M.D recapped his experiences providing dental services to the people of Northern Afghanistan. Sharkey spent two weeks in this war torn country last spring as a member of a mobile dental team. Sharkey took several photos while he was there and created a slide show to help club members gain a better insight of the horrific conditions that still exist. He said the mobile dental team spent much of its time training the local dentists how to use the equipment they brought with them. He said dental care in Afghanistan is nearly nonexistent. He explained that risk of infection is of greater concern than pain associated with dental related problems. Sharkey wasn’t very optimistic about the future of Afghanistan. He said he feared for his safety every moment he was there and that he continually witnessed illegal black market trading of arms and other contraband. He said security would have to be much greater if he were to return. He said the experience heightened his appreciation of the United States and that he nearly kissed its soil upon his return.
