Program
Rich Carter, superintendent of the Walla Walla School District, visited about the upcoming levy vote on Feb. 5, and why these funds are essential to maintain the quality of teaching and programs that the school district currently enjoys. This levy will replace the levy that was passed in 2000, and is another two-year levy. It is a maintenence and operations levy, which means that the money goes toward funding the district's programs and services.

All local levy dollars stay in Walla Walla schools. A sheet was handed out that had various statistics citing the increases in district expenditures in 2003-2004, as well as information about how the money is used. Compared to the rest of the state, the Walla Walla public schools put more money into teaching and spend less on administration and support services. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 5. Please vote. For more information about the levy, please contact Mark Higgins at the School District office at 526-6716 or mhiggins@wwps.org.

Youths of the Month
Mark Higgins presented the two Youths of the Month from DeSales High School, Rebecca Wolford and Connor Barry. Both students attended with their parents, as well as the school's guidance counselor. Both students are also very involved in their school as student officers and participate in athletics and other extracurricular activities. The students both spoke from their essays on "Youth Leaders-Focusing on a Better Future," and will be eligible to compete for the Youth of the Year Award and special $1,000 scholarships.

Rebecca talked about the need for youths to look toward a positive future and lead by example, doing small deeds of kindness for others every day, to improve others' quality of life. She also talked about focusing on solutions, not just on the problems themselves. Connor talked about leaders of the future learning from leaders from the past. He acknowledged that youth leaders make choices toward being better leaders, by following through on educational goals, interacting with teachers, learning how to budget their time. He talked about some of the ways he's been able to lead by example through athletics and other school involvements.

Quotes of the Week
"People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them." -George Bernard Shaw

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle
