Minor quake is reported

WEST PLAINS, Mo. (AP) — An earthquake with an estimated 4.0 magnitude shook parts of southern Missouri early Saturday, but no damage was reported.

The earthquake occurred at 12:09 a.m. and was centered about 10 miles northeast of West Plains, said Butch Kinerney, spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va.

The quake was widely felt and prompted several phone calls to the Howell County Sheriff’s Office, said Paul O’Brien, deputy dispatcher.

“It shook some houses, but no damage was done,” O’Brien said.

The quake was in the New Madrid Fault zone, which runs across parts of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois and Arkansas. The zone experiences more than 200 small earthquakes annually. On the Net:
