The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is suing the town of Atlantic Beach claiming its right to religious freedom is being violated because the town is refusing to give the church a permit to improve a rented building.

The church wants the town to pay $6 million in damages.

Town manager Carolyn Montgomery says the town cannot issue the permit because the church is violating a state law that governs how close churches can be to businesses that sell alcohol.
