Christian singer Michael W. Smith says he's never seen as much hatred directed at a president as there is toward President George W. Bush.

Smith is a close friend of the president. He says Bush tries to rise above his critics, but adds that "it's got to hurt to know that there's people out there who absolutely hate you."

Smith will sing his patriotic anthem "There She Stands" at the Republican National Convention Thursday night before Bush speaks.
