>Young stars emerge at SJ's theater camps

Aspiring actors can hone their craft at theater camps. Some programs also teach dance, music, and behind-the-scenes skills. Here, kids perform at the Ritz Theatre Co.’s camp.
Does your child love to take center stage? Or does his self-esteem need a boost? One of the theater camps listed below might be just the ticket. For programs that focus on other art forms, see the above story.

Mainstage Center for the Arts will hold seven drama and film camps at Camden County College in Blackwood, for grade 2 thru age 25. The five- to seven-week programs start the week of June 19. A dance camp also is held three afternoons a week, and a free evening program is available to high school students and young adults to age 25. The Ritz Theatre Co. offers a youth camp for grades 1 - 8 (10a to 3p) and a senior camp for high school students (3 to 6p). Campers can take acting, voice and dance classes, and attend three professional shows. Both sessions run July 17 to Aug 11 and culminate in a staged production at the historic Haddon Twp. theater. 856-858-5230

Voorhees Theatre Co. offers a theater session (grades 3 - 8; June 26 to Aug 5) and a technical session (grades 7 - 10; July 3 to Aug 5), Mon thru Thu from 9a to 3p. Both camps conclude with a production of Kilroy Was Here, a 1942 USO comedy. Tech campers also work on a teen production of "Once On This Island" (Aug 7 thru 13). VoorheesTheatre.org

Stage Kidz, run by the Haddonfield Plays & Players community theater troupe, offers two-, three- and five- week sessions, July 10 thru Aug 11, for ages 4 to 16. An open house is slated for Sun Apr 9, 12:45 to 1:45p. 856-429-8139

Fusion Academy of the Performing Arts offers two-, four- and six-week sessions – June 26 to Aug 4, 9a to 4p – concluding with a musical dance revue. Campers learn a variety of dance styles, music and drama skills. Extended care is available. 856-424-8836

Surflight Theatre on Long Beach Island holds three camps. A six-week session, July 3 thru Aug 13, offers musical theater training for ages 3 to 18. A one- week session, Aug 24 thru 31, offers a Shakespeare program for grades 7 - 12. And an eight-day program, June 26 thru July 3, ends with three nights of singing at the theater’s ice cream parlor, for grades 3 - 7. 609-492-9477 x202
