VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) Officials are investigating after a pilot of an experimental airplane was killed in a crash while trying to make an emergency landing.
Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine said it appeared the pilot was coming from the north and was attempting to turn toward the runway at Valdosta Regional Airport when he clipped trees and went down Saturday night.
Prine said the pilots identity was not immediately known and it would not be released until his family was notified.
He said officials did not know where the plane was flying to or from.
Witnesses said they heard an explosion and saw the plane clip trees. A pilot radioed the tower at the Valdosta airport moments before the crash reporting a fire in his cockpit.
