There were players in uniform, plenty of parents and the feel of baseball in the air at Riverview Park on Saturday.
Rome Youth Activities Inc. held its Dizzy Dean opening day ceremonies at the youth fields behind the levee and YAI vice president Eddie Digsby was pleased with the way things went.
We had a great day and a great turnout, said Digsby, who helped plan the event that kicked off the 2009 season for the organization and gave tribute to many of the groups former and current coaches.
The fields looked great. Everybody that was scheduled to be here came. It was a beautiful day for baseball, Digsby said. We couldnt have asked for anything more.
The ceremonial first pitch of the season was thrown out by one of the first YAI coaches, Hubert Stepp.

952, was part of an honored group that represented six decades of baseball behind the levee. Rome mayor Wright Bagby spoke, as did Rome YAI president Richard Penson.
Teams participating in Dizzy Dean baseball with the Rome YAI were recognized and a full day of games followed the morning ceremony.
