The Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society has selected Ann Ryan Smith for membership in the local chapter at University of Georgia.

Smith attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rome and graduated from Central High School in Carrollton. She is the daughter of W.W. “Bill” and Nancy Smith of Rome, and Joy Smith of Whitesburg.

She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture with an expected graduation date of May 2009. Smith said she then plans to remain in Athens to establish her design business, Lorax Design Services, and begin work on community garden projects.

Delta Epsilon Iota was established in order to recognize and encourage academic excellence in all fields of study. Students qualify on the basis of academic achievement. Prospective members must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours at an accredited college or university, while maintaining a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or a scholastic ranking within the top 15 percent of their class.
