A McDonough man who traveled to Rome with the express purpose of having sex with a 13-year-old girl was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison this morning.
Michael Lee Burnette, 46, was found guilty of aggravated child molestation, cruelty to children, enticing a child and statutory rape charges in Floyd County Superior Court.
Judge Tami P. Colston sentenced Burnette to 30 years total with 20 to serve in prison and the remainder on probation.
This guy is the definition of a sexual predator, said Assistant D.A. Suhirjahaan Morehead.
Burnette used an internet chat service, called the Quest chat line, to make initial contact with the victim and on at least one other occasion Burnett coerced the 13 year-old child, through intimidation, to allow him into her parents home by threatening to tell the childs parents of a previous encounter.
He demonstrated a consistent pattern of sexually assaulting young girls.
His victims were getting younger and younger and younger, District Attorney Leigh Patterson said.
Burnette will have to register as a sex offender and be chemically castrated upon release. He was also recommended to undergo mental health counseling.
