Local law enforcement officials have received a new truck that would aid response against possible chemical, biological or nuclear weapon attacks.
A program from the Federal Office of Domestic Preparedness has provided grant funds to equip eight-person Chemical Biological Nuclear Response Teams. The Rome and Floyd County team will serve Floyd, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Cherokee, Coweta, Dade, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Haralson, Heard, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties.
Other areas hosting teams are Hall, Lowndes, Laurens, Muscogee, Chatham, Gwinnet, Cobb and Waycross counties.
Manpower for the local team comes from the Floyd County Police Department, Rome Police Department and the Floyd County Sheriffs Office, with assistance from Floyd County EMA Director Scotty Hancock.
Team members, chosen from the Rome Floyd Swat Team and the Floyd County Special Operations Group, are Commander Tom Ewing, FCPD; Capt. Greg Dobbins, FCPD; Jay Barnett, FCPD; Mike Mitchell, FCPD; Melvin Scott, Rome PD; Don Davis, Rome PD; Brandon Ekey, Rome PD; Brad Smith, Floyd County Sheriffs Office.
Funding for the program was given to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to distribute to loca teams. GEMA has awarded $345,875 to the Floyd County Police Department to fund the team, and Capt. Mark Wallace will maintain the grant and oversee purchases.
