TRION — Six employees at a state prison in Northwest Georgia have been fired after two inmates escaped in October.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Sharmelle Brooks said five corrections officers and a lieutenant had been fired because of the escape. Records show Warden Dale Herndon was suspended after the incident.

Brooks said she did not

know when they were fired or if they had been replaced and also said she couldn’t give their names.

Michael Tweedel and Johnny Mack Brown escaped through a fence at the Chattooga County prison on Oct. 13.

Days later, a woman told authorities Brown took her hostage at knifepoint and forced her to drive him to Northeast Georgia, where he released her. He was captured weeks later.

Tweedel remains at large.
