More Police Reports: Woman charged with battery against deputies

A Rome woman already at the Floyd County Jail was charged with obstruction and battery charges after an alleged altercation with deputies Tuesday.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Laurel Michelle Gregory, 32, of 415 Decatur St., was already facing jail time for contempt charges and failure to appear on trespassing and disorderly conduct charges.

As deputies were transporting Gregory from the booking area to another part of the jail, she struck an officer in the face and continued to struggle as they tried to restrain her.

She remains in jail with no bail.

Woman arrested on felony theft charges

A Gordon County woman was arrested and charged with two felonies after she allegedly cashed a check on an account she knew to be lacking in funds.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Latasha Diane Hill, 27, of 321 Scott Brown Rd. in Fairmount, was charged with felony theft by deception and felony negotiating a check with fictitious information.

She allegedly cashed a check for $536.86 at a store on Martha Berry Boulevard, knowing the funds would be insufficient to cover the check.

She remains in jail on a hold from Murray County authorities.

Deposit account fraud

A Floyd County man was arrested on warrants stating that he wrote a bad check to a bail bond company.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Dennis David Adkins of a Lindale address was charged with felony deposit account fraud after police say he wrote a check in November to a bail bond company for $540. Police say he knew the payment, drawn on an account at Regions Bank, would not go through due to improper funds.

He was released from jail on $2,700 bail.

Man charged with theft of trailer

A Rome man was arrested and accused of being in possession of a trailer he knew to be stolen.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Jesse Ray Powell, 29, of 26 Kenwood Drive, was arrested by Floyd County deputies on Tuesday and charged with theft by receiving stolen property. Police say on Jan. 5, Powell received or retained property he knew to be stolen — namely, a trailer that had been reported stolen on Dec. 26 from a location on Shorter Industrial Boulevard.

Powell was released from jail on $1,350 bail.

Injured child remains in critical condition

A 2-year-old Rome boy remains in critical condition at T.C. Thompson’s Children Hospital in Chattanooga after he was run over by a van last week.

Rome police said Edgar Salzler was struck by a Taxi Interstate van on Friday after his family got out at the CVS pharmacy, 911 Shorter Ave.

Arson suspected in Holmes Avenue fire

Rome police are continuing to investigate a house fire at 100 Holmes Ave. that did significant damage to the structure.

According to Rome police reports:

The back of the house was producing a large amount of flames when fire fighters arrived on the scene around 3:45 p.m. Monday. They were able to get the fire under control and put out very quickly. The back half of the house and part of the attic were gutted, but the front of the house received minimal damage.

A witness reported seeing a light blue Chevrolet pickup truck and a brown Chrysler LeBaron pull up to the house before the fire started. According to the witness, two men described as wearing camouflage and carrying a yellow blow torch got out of the truck and went to the back of the house, returning a few minutes later and leaving the scene quickly.

The home had been reported vacant for the past year, and police had no suspects at the time of their report Monday evening.

Engine No. 1, Quint 5, Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 all responded to the fire.
