More rain could hit Northwest Georgia this week, and a flood warning will remain in effect until noon today for Floyd and Gordon counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers on Saturday and Sunday kept some river levels above the flood stage in both counties, although the waters are starting to recede after Tuesday’s record-setting rainfall.

On Sunday in Floyd County, the Oostanaula River at the Turner McCall Boulevard bridge measured 19.96 feet, which is below the flood stage of 25 feet.

The Etowah River crossing the bypass near the YMCA soccer fields also fell below its 32-foot flood level, measuring 19.64 feet at 6 p.m.

But Armuchee Creek, with a flood stage of 19 feet, was still at 19.5 feet and the Coosa River near Plant Hammond was at 571.40 feet, with a flood stage at 570 feet. The Oostanula River in Calhoun was at 23.2 feet, with a flood stage of 20 feet.

The National Weather Ser
vice
is predicting mostly sunny skies on Monday with a high near 52, although temperatures are expected to drop to the middle 20s at night and there is a 20 percent chance of light snow after midnight.

For Tuesday, there is a 20- percent chance of light snow or rain showers before 1 p.m. Wednesday should be clear, but rain is again predicted for Thursday.

Winter rains are needed to replenish soil moisture, lakes and wells in time for heavy summer usage, according to the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, but the past 15 winters have been drier than the long-term average.
