Community Development Director Ron Sitterding gave Rome City Commission members an update on his departments plans for 2009:
The city and county expect to apply jointly for state Community Development Block Grant funding to help the nonprofit Mercy Senior Care build a new facility in South Rome. The center would be part of the ongoing Etowah Terrace redevelopment plan.
Another joint project will use $266,000 available through the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program to buy and refurbish foreclosed duplexes on Avenue B as public housing for low-income residents.
The city is seeking state permission to use a $100,000 recreational trails grant to build the Kingfisher Trail on the South Rome side of the Etowah River from the bridge to Silver Creek. The money is designated for a connector trail on the downtown side of the river, but Sitterding said the Kingfisher project is a higher priority as part of the Etowah Terrace redevelopment.
The Northwest Georgia Housing Authority has completed a $250,000 master plan for the revitalization and redevelopment of the Maple Street area in East Rome. Next step is to apply for funding through federal Hope IV grants.
Plans are to continue the Minor Repair Program, which provided home improvement grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to 29 low-income elderly residents last year.
