The Rome City Commission will consider a zoning application tonight for a proposed tattoo parlor in South Rome.

The board caucuses at 5 p.m. with the regular meeting following at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 601 Broad St.

Keith Gossett is seeking commercial zoning that would allow him to add a small tattoo studio at the back of his family home at 232 S. Broad St.

Gossett said clients would be taken by appointment only, but members of the South Rome Redevelopment Corp. are opposing the change. A memorandum from SRRDC Vice Chairman Jim Keaten points out the corner is slated for residential use in the master plan for revitalizing the district.

The Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission recommended denial unanimously at its Dec. 4 meeting.

City Commissioners will have the final say after a public hearing.

First up, however, board members will choose their chairman, who will hold the title of mayor for the year.

Ward 1 Commissioner Wright Bagby Jr. currently serves as mayor, with Ward 2 Commissioner Duane Reid designated mayor pro tem. Bagby succeeded Ronnie Wallace, who led the board from 2002 until his retirement at the end of 2007.

Commissioners also are expected to reappoint City Manager John Bennett and recognize city employees who have reached career milestones.

Decisions also are expected about several changes to the Unified Land Development Code.

The planning commission has recommended approval of proposals setting rules for the use of outdoor lighting, private wind generation systems and protecting known cemeteries.
