GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) -- Spalding County officials say a Griffin textile plan which employs about 350 people is expected to close next month and move its operations to Brazil.

The plant, which manufactures towels and other textiles, is operated by Springs Industries, which is based in Fort Mill, S. C.

County Manager William Wilson said the company notified the county last month that it would be moving the operation in February.

The Griffin plant, formerly called Dundee Mills, had about 2,000 employees in the 1980s and was the county’s largest employer.

Wilson said Springs is offering employee transfers to available positions outside Georgia, and is paying for worker retraining at Griffin Technical College.
