Calhoun is back at the Georgia Dome, this time playing for a state title, after the Yellow Jackets beat Brooks County in the final seconds of their Class AA semifinal game 38-35 tonight in Quitman.

This is the first time Calhoun has been back to the Dome since 2005, when the Jackets beat Grady on the way to a championship game appearance against Charlton County.

Quarterback Michael Johnson threw for for three touchdowns and ran in a 1-yard quarterback sneak to push the 12-2 Yellow Jackets into next week's title game in Atlanta.

Calhoun will take on powerhouse Buford after the Wolves beat Fitzgerald in the other AA semifinal game.

On the other end of the emotional spectrum, Rome High's quest for a football state championship was cut short tonight on the final play of the Wolves' Class AAAA semifinal game at Marist. The homestanding War Eagles pulled out a dramatic 19-17 win after the Wolves led for the entire game.

On fourth down and goal with just six seconds left, the War Eagles scored a touchdown on a reverse play to end the game - and the Wolves' season.

Reggie Whatley scored two touchdowns for the Wolves tonight during the first quarter as Rome built an early 14-0 lead.

Rome ends its most successful season ever with an 11-3 record. The Wolves won the first-ever road playoff game in school history at Sandy Creek on Nov. 21, then upset Statesboro 41-21 last week to advance the state's semifinal round for the first time ever.

Marist (13-1) has now won 26 straight home playoff games, a streak dating back more than a decade. The War Eagles will play for the Class AAAA state championship next week in the Georgia Dome, taking on Tucker, which beat Griffin in the other state semifinal.
