...Tara Flennery (center) talks to her mother Sandy while standing in line at J.C. Penney at Mount Berry Square mall this morning. The two woke up at 5 a.m. to go take advantage of early sales the day after Thanksgiving.
Here's what other shoppers and employees are saying about "Black Friday" sales:
Shoppers Burbee Heard, Jr. and Remai Heard of Rome hit the stores at 7:30 a.m. for toys and clothes for their children. At 10:30 a.m. the Riverbend shopping center off Turner McCall Boulevard helped the couple cross out several items on their gift list. Based on the store, we think prices are reasonable this year, said Burbee of Ross at Riverbend. The couple was able to purchase clothes and toys for four out of seven children at Ross. We had a budget, but we didnt stick to it, added Remai Heard. The couple plans to travel to the Prime Outlets in Calhoun or the mall in Cedartown to find shoes for their children.
Roman Ann Nelson shopped fJim Harris of Rome reads the paper at The Mens Den in the mall while waiting for his wife to finish shopping. The mom of two woke up at 7 a.m. and drove back from Alabama where she spent Thanksgiving, and endured a 30-minute line at Toys-R-Us. The sales have been pretty good, but I havent had a strict budget, she said.
Roman mom Pam Overby woke up at 6 a.m. and has toured several stores in Rome including Game Stop. Its been pretty good so far, she said. She purchased some video games at Game Stop for her two boys at home. Ive been to Wal-Mart, Circuit City and will go in a couple more stores.
On Broadstreet, Trion resident Misty McGuese said sales havent been as good around town, but was able to find some gifts at Paulas. The sales are not as good this year and have been bet-ter, she said. And, the things that are on sale there are a lot less to choose from. McGuese was shopping at Paulas this morning and pur-chased a webkins and purse. She has two children at home to shop for and 15 people to-tal to find gifts for this season. Ive been up since 4 a.m. and have went to K-mart, Toys-R-Us, Circuit City and Lowes, she said.
Becky Hickman, who is from Sugar Valley, stayed in Cedartown overnight and got to the mall at 4:45 am. She decided to come all the way to Rome to Mount Berry Square Mall. "It hasn't been near as crowded as I thought it'd be. I looked online to see what sales were and they announced they had free goody bags. I came for the prices and the goody bag. The first 1000 people got vouchers and a goody bag," she said. Goody bags contained a voucher for a free lottery ticket, a gift certificate from between $10-100 and coupons. She also got a free snow globe at JC Penney.
"We came because we wanted to watch all the people and to get all the good deals," said Sandy Flennery of Rome, who woke up at 5 a.m. to go shopping with her daughter Tara. Flennery said she also liked hearing all the Christmas music.
Jim Harris of Rome came shopping with his wife but settled down in The Mens Den at the mall, which is a rest area featuring couches and chairs, a Coke machine, newspapers and a television, as well as toys for children. "My wife is shopping at the other end of the world. Im just waiting on her to get done," he said as he kicked his feet up on the coffee table to read the newspaper.
"I've been here since 4:30 a.m.," said Ron Jones, a sales associate at Sears who had a warm breakfast at the Waffle House before heading into work. "It's been busy. I've rung up over $9,000 of merchandise in the past three hours."
