Two annual Thanksgiving feasts are preparing for larger crowds in Rome and Cave Spring this year, but theres a dire need for more than just donated turkeys and canned goods.
Kathron Crider, who organizes the annual Day of Giving free Thanksgiving meal at the Hearn Academy in Cave Spring on Nov. 27, said that the free clothing closet she also runs is in dire need of winter clothes, especially for boys.
I ran through my winter clothing really quickly this year, she said. And when youre a single mom on a fixed income with four or five kids in school, you have to get them winter clothing.
Besides looking for donations of winter clothes to be distributed at her annual meal, shes asking for unwrapped toys for children from toddlers to 16 and a few more turkeys to help make the coming meal a success. Shes also looking for a few more helping hands to set up for the meal on Nov. 26 and to help out on Thanksgiving day.
The Rev. Terrell Shields, an organizer with the Thanksgiving Love Feast at the Rome Civic Center, expects more than 3,000 people this year because of economic troubles.
His most dire need at the moment is funding.
What we need the most right now is the funds to purchase the food so we can prepare it, he said. We especially need desserts, like cakes and pies.
Four shifts of volunteers, upwards of 200 people from around Rome, come to volunteer every year, but Shields said that more hands could be helpful to cook and clean up after the feast.
Shields said besides the free meal, they also hand out warm coats and sweaters and personal hygiene kits after the meal to those in need.
