Retired Rome Fire Chief Bobbie McKenzie was recognized today by the Floyd County Commission for his years of service to the Rome Fire Department.
McKenzie retired this summer after 18 years at the helm of the department he joined 41 years ago.
His position is still vacant, though Deputy Chiefs Benny Bohannon and Gordon Henderson are heading operations until a new chief is named.
The fire department has narrowed a list of 74 applicants to 12 candidates, including three from within the department, said Human Resources Director Rita Odom.
Thats down from 19 who were chosen to answer a set of questions and be interviewed either in person or over the phone.
The caliber of applicants, said Odom, made narrowing the process down really difficult.
Odom hopes to soon narrow the 12 candidates to a three to five finalists.
