ATHENS — Current New York Giants and former Rockmart High and University of Georgia running back Danny Ware was arrested this past weekend on a charge of pedestrian under the influence and pedestrian walking in the road.

Ware, in his second season with the Giants, was booked at the Clarke County Jail at 5:24 a.m. on Sunday and released four hours later on $500 bond.

The police report said Ware admitted to drinking and his breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.152.

Police said Ware and a woman were standing in the street talking and traffic had to steer around them.

Hawks jump to 16th in NAIA poll

After earning their first-ever victory over the Lee University Flames last week, the Shorter College Hawks men’s soccer team took a big leap in the latest NAIA Top 25 coaches poll, jumping from No. 24 to No. 16.

Additionally, Shorter was ranked first in the Southern States Athletic Conference, ahead of cross-town rival Berry College (entering the poll at No. 17), and No. 23 Auburn University-Montgomery (down from No. 8).

The Hawks (6-1, 5-0) are on a week’s rest going into today’s conference matchup with Reinhardt College (4-1, 1-1), with the men beginning play at 3 p.m., and the women following at 5 p.m. They will travel Saturday to play No. 15 Belhaven College.

There were no changes in the top five. Coming in at No. 2 again this week are the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific (Calif.) who collect six first-place votes and 637 total points. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) checks in at No.3 after receiving 611 total points. McKendree (Ill.) stays at No. 4 in the poll after collecting 589 total points. Rounding out the Top 5 is Southern Nazarene (Okla.). The Crimson Storm earn 565 total points.

This week’s poll sees five new teams enter the Top 25: Berry, No. 19 Notre Dame (Ohio), No. 21 Benedictine (Kan.), No. 24 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) and No. 25 Warner Pacific (Ore.).

Raiders fire Kiffin 4 games into second season

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Oakland Raiders fired Lane Kiffin on Tuesday just four games into his second season, ending a public feud with owner Al Davis that had been simmering since the start of the year.

Kiffin had a 5-15 record since being hired last year, losing his final game 28-18 on Sunday to San Diego.

The decision to remove Kiffin was as much about his frequent criticisms of Davis’ franchise as it was the team’s performance on the field. Those critiques reached a peak when Kiffin distanced himself from the defense after a blowout loss in the season opener, saying that was under coordinator Rob Ryan and Davis’ control.

However, during a news conference Tuesday, Davis also critiqued several of Kiffin’s coaching and personnel decisions. Among other things, he said Kiffin objected to the Raiders using the first pick in the 2007 draft on quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

The Raiders said Kiffen was fired for cause, meaning they will likely try not to pay him for the remainder of his contract. He signed a two-year deal worth about $4 million with a team option for 2009 when he took over last year. Kiffin’s agent Gary Uberstine had no immediate comment.

Stephens should play even if he’s not Vols starter

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Even if he doesn’t beat out Jonathan Crompton for Tennessee’s starting quarterback job, Nick Stephens likely will see playing time on Saturday.

Vols offensive coordinator Dave Clawson says he’s frustrated that Crompton’s strong practice performances haven’t translated into strong play in games.

That’s why Crompton and Stephens are competing to start for Tennessee (1-3) against Northern Illinois (2-2) on Saturday.

If Stephens proves he can run the offense well, but doesn’t play well enough in practice to win the starting job, Clawson still wants to see if he can perform well in a game situation.

Stephens has had two pass attempts this season, both late against UAB. One was an incompletion. The other was a 42-yard pass to Brandon Warren when the Vols were backed up to their 3-yard line.

Lee, Lidge win comeback player awards

NEW YORK — Pitchers Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians and Brad Lidge of the Philadelphia Phillies were honored Tuesday as baseball’s Comeback Players of the Year.

Lee went 22-3 with an American League-leading 2.54 ERA. The previous season, he was 5-8 with a 6.29 ERA and was demoted to the minor leagues.

Lidge was a perfect 41-for-41 in save opportunities as the Phillies’ closer. In 2007, he converted just 19 of 27 for the Houston Astros.
