The Lovejoy Baptist Church, Branham Avenue, will sponsor a barbecue plate sale on Friday and Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $7 per plate and will include barbecue, slaw, baked beans, dessert and bread. The Rome-Floyd County firefighters are sponsoring The Great Spaghetti Challenge on Friday to benefit the Rome-Floyd County Commission on Children and Youth and its child abuse prevention programs. The Challenge will be held at the Rome Civic Center from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door or at the Kroger customer service desk, Pullen’s Ordinary Bicycles, 105 Broad St., or the youth commission, 3 Professional Court. Rome Little Theatre’s production of “Gypsy” will be Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m., April 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. and April 5 at 2:30 p.m. at the DeSoto Theater on Broad Street. Single Friends will have a dance on Saturday from 7-10 p.m. at the Anthony Recreation Center. DJ Ken Hughes will play oldies, country and any requested music. Admission is $8.

The Rome Art Coterie announces the opening reception for the 7th National Juried Art Exhibition on April 3 at 6 pm at the Rome Area Council for the Arts Gallery. The exhibit features artists from the local area and from across the country for a total of 47 artists. The exhibit will run March 31 through May 1, 2009, at the RACA gallery, 248 Broad St. Admission to the exhibit and the reception is open to the public and is free of charge.

Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home announces the new exhibit, Cherokee Baskets. Learn the history of one of the oldest crafts of the Cherokee, as well as view more than 25 baskets which are on loan from local basket collections.  There will also be baskets that may be purchased.  The exhibit runs through April 10. Tuesday- Friday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adults-$3, senior citizens-$2 and students $1.50.  Call the museum at 706 291-9494 or go to its Web site at chieftainsmuseum.org for information.

As the second in a year-long celebration of Cherokee arts, Cherokee Pottery explores the history of the old art of pottery made by the Cherokees from April 14 - July 11 at Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home. The Eastern Band of Cherokees has the longest continuing pottery tradition of any tribe in the U.S. in their native homeland.  Admission: Adults - $3, senior citizens - $2 and students-$1.50. The museum is open Tuesday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, 10 to 4.  For information call 706-291-9494 or visit its Web site at www.chieftainsmuseum.org   Chieftains Museum annual Herb and Plant Sale will be held on April 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. The sale will be held at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds, rain or shine. There will be more than 5,000 herbs as well as hundreds of flowers. This year all members of Chieftains will receive a free herb.  All proceeds benefit the museum.  For information call the museum at 706-291-9494 or visit the website at www.chieftainsmuseum.org.
