Floyd County is receiving Community HOME Investment Program (CHIP) funds totaling $300,000 and recently won entry into the WaterFirst Community Program, said County Commission Chairman Jerry Jennings.

The CHIP program is a federal grant that assists low and moderate income families in making down payments on their first homes. In collaboration with the city of Rome and the Northwest Georgia Housing Authority’s Appalachian Housing Counseling Agency, Floyd County proposes to provide down payment and closing cost assistance to 30 first-time home buyers. 75 persons are expected to benefit, 100% of whom will be low-to-moderate-income.

The city of Rome will administer the grant, as it has in the past, but it will now be available countywide.

The WaterFirst Community Program recognizes communities for excellence in water stewardship. The voluntary program involves a partnership between local governments, state agencies and other organizations working together to enhance the quality of life through the wise management and protection of water resources.

“This is a testament to Floyd County’s attention to the importance of water to our community,” said Jennings. “I am proud of the water professionals that work with Floyd County and the excellence service they provide.”

The program was announced by Governor Sonny Perdue in 2002. The city of Rome was designated in 2003.

Designated communities are eligible to receive a 1% interest rate reduction for GEFA state revolving water related loans, DCA Community Block Development Grants for water related projects, as well as priority for EPD grant funding;

WaterFirst Class Participants are provided resources, tools and support to help meet water management goals.

Floyd County will receive state-wide recognition, including road signage and authorization to use the WaterFirst trademarked logo for being environmental stewards. It will further receive access to the WaterFirst peer network and resources and are invited to special “issue retreats/workshops” addressing critical water stewardship issues.
