The voice of the Atlanta Thrashers, Dan Kamal, spent a few minutes Friday at the Palladium for the Rome Exchange Clubs weekly luncheon and held a question-and-answer session with club members about the NHL team.
Kamal has been in sports broadcasting for 23 years, first with the Atlanta Knights and then with the Thrashers. His expertise was on display as he told Exchangites about his hopes for the upcoming season after a 2007-08 season that didnt end well.
Its winning that sells, and I think thats why well bounce back and be a more successful team this year, Kamal said.
Kamal said that with a new coach, John Anderson, a minor league coach with four championships under his belt, and a young team that was promoted from the minor leagues, the team will have a chance to make it to the playoffs or further this year.
This team is going to be under the radar this year, Kamal said. And I believe we have the goaltending to be champions this year.
But with a sport that hasnt been as popular in the South, the team will have to struggle against both college and professional football, Atlanta Hawks basketball and the Atlanta Braves to fill their seats.
Kamal said that the best way to do that was to continue being successful on the ice.
The Atlanta area was on fire when the Thrashers made the playoffs in the 2006-07 season, Kamal said. So the biggest thing we can do at this point is put out a quality product every night.
With new talent and new coaches, the Thrashers will start the 2008-09 season October 10 with their first game against the Washington Capitols, with Kamals play-by-play action being broadcasted on WLAQ-AM 1410 in Rome.
