Area Achievers: Army private graduates training with honor

... ...Army Pvt. David J. Whatley has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

He earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Whatley is the son of Cleo Mooring of Rome and brother of Sharon Stephens of Cartersville.

The private graduated in 1991 from Cedartown High School.

Coosa High student named All-American Scholar

A.J. Stephens from Rome, has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. Stephens, who attends Coosa High School, was nominated for this honor by R

Shorter students receive honors scholarship

Shorter College announces the following students have received the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship: Heather Ashley Deiters, a home-schooled student from Cartersville, the daughter of Thomas and Kay Deiters; and Joseph Henry Johnson III, of Cedartown, a graduate of Cedartown High School and is the son of Joseph Johnson.

Vanderbilt’s Dean’s List

Vanderbilt University has named the following students to the Dean’s List for the spring 2008 semester:

Nabijan Nizamidin, School of Engineering, son of Dr. N. Jappar and Mrs. R. Aihemaiti of Rome, and Mala Sanjika Nimalasuriya, Arts and Science, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Nimalasuriya of Rome.

Student graduates Summa Cum Laude from Kennesaw

Kathryn Taylor Head recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kennesaw State University with a nursing degree.

Head is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society and the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

She is the daughter of Twyla and Ross Crump and Kenny and Beth Head. She is a graduate of Rome High School.
