Floyd County Schools teachers returned to school Thursday in the calm before the storm.
Many spent their first day back organizing lesson plans and adding final touches to classroom decorations.
Most teachers will be attending teacher meetings the first few days back. For this reason, many teachers have been preparing for school during the last couple weeks.
This is actually my fourth week up here just trying to get things organized, said Gretchen Brock, a new eighth-grade reading and writing teacher at Armuchee Middle School. I am looking forward to the new students, curriculum and school.

Johnson said she still has a lot to get done before Midway Primarys open house Tuesday. Things to do include finalizing schedules, updating rosters and working on bulletin boards.
I love the start of school because its so fun, said Kim Donehoo, a family consumer science teacher at Pepperell High School. Donehoo has been teaching for 25 years, seven at Pepperell.
With obesity being such a problem, it is important to plan a healthy meal, prepare foods in a healthy way and use substitutions like spices instead of fatty oils, said Donehoo.
She said she is excited about her students learning more about nutrition and instilling confidence in their ability to make healthy choices.
