The board of directors of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce voted unanimously this morning to support the third phase of the special purpose, local option sales tax for education.
Floyd County citizens will vote on SPLOST III Sept. 16.
Rome and Floyd County have a commitment to offering superior educational opportunities for our children. Education is often identified by current employers as necessary to their continuation of business, said Randy Quick, chairman of the board and general manager of South 107.
Additionally, prospective businesses and industries exploring expansion and relocation to our area look at the educational opportunities offered. This SPLOST is the most fair and equitable way of creating the quality learning environment our children deserve.
Craig McDaniel, president of Coosa Valley Technical College, said Rome and Floyd County schools have used monies from the SPLOST program well, and urged board members and local education leaders on hand for the vote, to talk up SPLOST III to ensure its passage at the polls.
SPLOST III would continue the penny sales tax for education. Supporters often point out that visitors, not just citizens, contribute to the sales tax for school improvements.
The SPLOST III funds will be divided between the Rome City and Floyd County school systems, approximately one-third and two-thirds respectively.
