Floyd County public safety workers could see pay raises as early as October, under a proposal approved by a special committee today.
We looked at a lot of things, but our No. 1 priority was retaining employees, County Manager Kevin Poe said.
The plan would set new minimum salaries for police, sheriff, E-911, prison and animal control personnel based on comparisons with rates paid in surrounding and comparable counties.

October would bring pay adjustments based on years of service and a move to increase all salaries at least halfway to the new minimums. Another salary adjustment would come in July 2009, with full implementation by October 2009.
Department heads will start meeting with their employees in the next week to get feedback and, if the plan is well-received, it will go to the full Floyd County Commission at its July 22 meeting.
Floyd County Police Sgt. John Blalock, an employee representative on the special committee, said the plan begins to address pay compression which has led to newer hires sometimes earning more than their supervisors.
It is expensive, and we didnt expect it all to be implemented immediately, he said. This is a starting point.
Poe said he is recommending the special committee remain active and continue to monitor for pay and benefit inequities that can emerge over time.
