A man trying to retrieve items spilled onto the road was killed late Thursday night when he was struck by a car on U.S. 27 North of Rome, police said.
The incident occurred near the Armuchee Church of God at 4974 Martha Berry Highway.
The white male victim, whose name was not released Thursday, was struck by a woman driving a late model Honda Accord northbound on U.S. 27, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m. at the scene, said Deputy Coroner Ernie Studard.
The man had some items fall out of the back of a pickup truck in which he was riding. The truck turned back around and he went into the roadway to retrieve the items when he was struck.
Officer Chris Shelly said no charges will be filed against the driver of the Honda. Shelly said it was a dark area of the highway and the woman could not see the man when the incident occurred.
Studard said he could not release the victims name Thursday night because family members had not yet been notified.
Floyd County Police and Rome Fire Department emergency crews responded to the accident scene, and Georgia State Patrol officers assisted with directing traffic.
Traffic was reduced briefly to one lane in each diretion.
