A thunderstorm packing heavy winds felled trees and some power lines at locations around Rome and Floyd County this evening. Georgia Power is reporting that 780 customers are without power in Coosa, off of Rockmart Highway, Wax and Calhoun road areas.

Georgia Power representative Curtis Hart said that the company is bringing in extra engineers and service people to deal with the power outages and should have power restored soon.

There were also reports of trees falling on Darlington Drive, Rockmart, Pleasant Valley, Chulio and Calhoun roads as well as tangled power lines at several locations.

The winds knocked out a traffic signal where John Maddox Connector intersects the bypass.

Also, police are diverting motorists off Calhoun Road, just north of the bypass, where a power line is lying on the road.

In Rome, a resident said a lightning bolt hit a pine tree in a back yard about 5:40 p.m. at a John Ross Drive location, splitting the tree, tossing big hunks in all direct

ion. When the lightning hit the tree, the resident said, it sounded like an explosion.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the storm.

The National Weather Service reported that .08 inches of rain had fallen by about 6 p.m. at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport.

Central Floyd County and southwestern Chattooga County were under a severe thunderstorm warning from about 5 until about 6:15 p.m.

Forecasters said the storm was capable of producing winds up to 60 miles per hour and might produce hail.

Floyd and several surrounding counties remain under a severe thunderstorm watch by the National Weather Service until 9 p.m.

The watch includes neighboring Gordon, Bartow and Polk counties.
