Off-roading fans can rejoice Saturday with the Mud Bog and Rock Crawl taking place in the Gore community south of Summerville on U.S. 27., with gates opening at 8 a.m. and events starting at 9 a.m.
The mud bog and rock crawl features five different classes, with a $15 entry fee for each vehicle entered in the contest. Tickets for the event are $10 per person. Children 12 and under get in free. Money raised benefits the Gore Volunteer Fire Department.
Gore volunteer Fire Captain Jayme Dawson said that last years event had more than 2,000 people enter the gates, and he hopes this year the crowds will be much larger.
We think the crowd will be much bigger this year since vendors will be giving away free stuff, Dawson said.
Dawson also said that a variety of food will be available, from hamburgers and hot dogs to funnel cakes.
We even have a guy coming up that will be making doughnuts, Dawson said. Anything you can think of that youd want to eat, well have it there.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to funding the Gore Volunteer Fire Department. According to Dawson, the fire department receives $7,000 from Chattooga County. Donations from sponsors have helped the firefighters put on the mud bog, including the purchase of trophies for winners Saturday by OReilly Auto Parts.
Well even have the Marines showing up again this year, Dawson said. Last year they brought a six-wheeled personnel carrier and got it in the mud. Theyre planning on participating again this year too.
