Two Romans are among 50 charter members of the University of Georgias The Grady Fellowship who will be honored this fall.
Mike McDougald and the Rev. Warren Jones will be honored at a gala ceremony commencing The Centennial Campaign for the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication on Nov. 20.
Jones, 86, was a UGA student and teacher in the 1940s, the first secretary of the first selection committee of the Peabody Awards in 1941, and the only surviving member of the DiGamma Kappa radio fraternity, which was started at UGA.
I taught for three years at Georgia, and I was younger than many of my students, Jones said. I had a lot of famous students, too.
Its quite an honor, and I dont go around tooting my own horn, but Ive been able to give the university many of my personal things that will go into the new $30 million library, he added.
Among those items are various photos from the first Peabody A

wards ceremony and a charter key from the radio fraternity.
McDougald, 77, attended Georgia for a year after graduating from Emorys school of journalism, but his familys roots run deep in the school. His brother Worth McDougald was the chair of the Peabody Awards for about 30 years.
(My brother) is my connection there that is important, McDougald said. He was a long-time professor in the journalism school (at UGA) and built the Peabody Awards to what they are today.
McDougald, who worked in radio for nearly 50 years, now serves as an appointed chair of Georgia Public Broadcasting.
He also chairs the Foundation for Public Broadcasting in Georgia and in Rome is a partner with Advertising Dynamics Inc.
