Georgia Power Co. crews were working Sunday night to restore power to nearly 1,200 customers scattered across Floyd County.
Curtis Hart with Georgia Power said 900 customers in Armuchee, 260 in Coosa and various customers throughout Rome lost power after trees and limbs blew onto power lines Sunday.
Hart said linemen were brought in to fix the lines early Sunday morning, and they worked through most of Sunday repairing lines.
The wind isnt helping anything. Its really, really strong and is supposed to be through (Sunday) night and onto (Monday) morning, Hart said.
Carol Boatright, spokesperson with Georgia Power, said about 5,000 customers throughout Northwest Georgia were without power Sunday night.
In addition to the 1,200 customers in Floyd County, there were 550 in Cartersville, 170 in Cedartown, 3,400 in Carrollton and 125 in Dalton, she said.
The number of customers who lost power substantially increased throughout the afternoon, mainly because of the strong winds.
According to the Web site www.weatherchannel.com, gusting winds reached up to 28 mph Sunday afternoon. Approximately 1.55 inches of rain fell Sunday at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport.
We still have 58,000 (customers) out in Macon, and we arent anticipating them restored until midnight (Monday morning), she said. We certainly dont think itll be out that long in this area. ... Since (damage) is spread out though, its going to take awhile.
Because of the heavy wind damage and tornado damage that swept through Georgia early Sunday morning, Georgia Power brought in an additional 200 linemen across the state to help restore power.
We have about 500 guys out there working on this problem, she added.
