The final day of the annual Bernard Neal Middle School Tennis Tournament ended a day early Saturday.
Rain halted play on the final day of the event, sponsored by the Coosa Valley Tennis Association.
All the teams — Armuchee, Cedartown, Coosa, Model, Pepperell and Rockmart — had played each other in the regular season, so the results were determined by how the teams competed against each other in their last regular season matches.
The girls winner was Armuchee and the runner-up was Pepperell. Model won the boys division and Armuchee came in second. Despite the rain, CVTA coordinator Bill Thornton said the tournament was a success.
“It went really, really well. We had great participation,” he said. “These middle school tournaments are always interesting because of all the parents and grandparents that come out.”
A banquet and awards ceremony was held in Hamler Gym.
The CVTA’s annual George Wallis Service Award was presented to Jack Zeiger. It was pointed out by Mike Burns, the presenter, that Zeiger worked tirelessly on the adult league state championship in 2007 which resulted in the Rome event being named tournament of the year by the GTA.
“We had around 300 people at our banquet and award ceremony and we didn’t even play,” Thornton said. “They still came out. I was really impressed.”
A certificate was presented to players from each school for most improved, best sportsmanship and most valuable. Following are the award winners:
Armuchee — Most valuable girl, Kristen Shiflett, most valuable boy, Austin Ruth; most improved girl, Baylee Branton, most improved boy, Hayden Childre; best sportsmanship girl Casey Chapman, best sportsmanship boy, Carston Boehm.
Cedartown — Most valuable girl, Mary Page Gray, most valuable boy, Andrew Arencibia; most improved girl, Jenna Conner, most improved boy, Brett East; best sportsmanship girl Balerie DeWandel, best sportsmanship boy, Griffin Whitfield.
Coosa — Most valuable girl, Kristen hall, most valuable boy, Ben Corbin; most improved girl, Emily Weeks, most improved boy, Austin Jarrett; best sportsmanship girl, Miranda Morgan, best sportsmanship boy, Justin Hodge.
Model — Most valuable girl, Bekah Davis, most valuable boy, Michael Tucker and Avery Haynes; most improved girl, Kathryn Boylan, most improved boy, Tyler Allee; best sportsmanship girl Mackenzie Marable.
Pepperell — Most valuable girl, Kailey Treglown, most valuable boy, Josh Evans; most improved girl, Courtney Minter, most improved boy, Isaac Cason; best sportsmanship girl, Hanna Martin, best sportsmanship boy, Pierce Henson.
Rockmart — Most valuable girl, Kaitlyn Burns, most valuable boy, Jeremiah Wheatley; most improved girl, Jamie Ann Conway, most improved boy, Cody Alexander; best sportsmanship girl, Brianna Chafin, best sportsmanship boy, Zac Thaxton.
