Working at Harbor House, where child victims of physical or sexual abuse receive help, was difficult for Celestia Price at first.
You have to have the right disposition to do it, and its hard at first not to get too attached to the children, she said. You have to take a step back because you realize how much good a center like this is doing, and you feel for the victim, but you cant get so attached you cant do your job.
Through her undergraduate work at Shorter College as a psychology major, Price spent two semesters interning with Harbor House. She volunteered and helped professionals and law enforcement personnel advocate for children suspected victims of sexual/physical abuse.
Price, one of 400-plus students graduating from Shorter today, is going to law school in the fall in hopes of becoming a prosecutor. She said working at Harbor House opened her eyes to what she wanted to pursue as a career.
This was the final push, and as I looked at different law schools, I was more and more excited, which reinforced what I decided to do, said Price, who has received a full scholarship to Quinnipiac Universitys School of Law in Hamden, Conn. In the past I always considered a law career. I wasnt sure I could separate myself, but I realized I could.
Price comes to Shorter from Monroe, N.C. The small campus not too far from home appealed to Price, who also earned two minors in history and political science, which she says will help her as a prosecutor.
Im ready for a change. Ive enjoyed my experience here though Ive never been away from home this long, said Price. Now Im moving further away, but Im excited about exploring something new.
But when I visited the school (Quinnipiac), I fell in love, she said. And it was a weight off my shoulders that I wouldnt have a future in debt because prosecutors dont make as much as corporate or defense attorneys, but I dont have to pick a job based on salary because of debt.
Price said she will miss the relationships she developed with the professors at Shorter.
They care about the students, and theres a lot of personal interest they become friends, she said. They want you to succeed, but I didnt expect to be friends with my professors, but its a good thing about Shorter.
