An Adairsville woman was killed and a man sent to the hospital after a head-on collision on Ga. 140 near the Bartow County line this morning.

According to Floyd County Police Officer Chad Johnson:

Sheila Elaine Burnett, 43, of Adairsville died at the scene. Lonnie Plunkett of Dallas was taken to Floyd Medical Center.

Burnett, driving a blue Ford Focus east toward Adairsville, swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting a white Dodge van driven by Plunkett head-on. Witnesses said they saw her go limp and slump over the steering wheel just before the collision.

Plunkett was conscious and suffering from leg and back injuries. Johnson said later he was treated at the hospital for a broken foot.

Traffic was backed up for nearly two miles in each direction for almost an hour after the wreck, but cars started moving through the area again around 12:30 p.m.
