The handcycling road race was held today on Big Texas Valley Road in northern Floyd County.
Handcyclers in the River Days event, named the Clocktower Classic, started at Armuchee Baptist Church on Texas Valley Road. The route turned west onto Big Texas Valley Road and racers turned around at Friday Road and returned to Armuchee Baptist Church. The length of the race was approximately 24 miles.
Floyd County police provided a rolling roadblock with the road opening at about 4:30 p.m. after the riders passed.
Organizers said 24 cyclers competed in the race, and about 126 spectators and others were in attendance.
Krige Schabort of Cedartown outsprinted two other riders over the last 200 yards to win the race in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 44 seconds. Scott McNiece was second and Oscar Sanchez was third.
All three of those riders were in the knee seat category. Matt Updike was the first long seat winner, coming in fourth overall in 1:09:55.
The Clocktower Classic races will continue today, with the criterium in downtown Rome starting at 3 p.m. A time trial will conclude the weekend event on Saturday at 9 a.m. on Technology Parkway.
